1 ἔθων
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: in χλούνην σῦν ἄγριον... ὅς κακὰ πόλλ' ἔρδεσκεν ἔθων Οἰνῆος ἀλωήν (Ι 540), pl. σφήκεσσιν ἐοικότες..., οὕς παῖδες ἐριδμαίνουσιν ἔθοντες (Π 260).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: In antiquity = βλάπτων, φθείρων, or ἐρεθίζοντες; also ἔθει φθείρει, ἐρεθίζει H. Others connected εἴωθα `is used'. - Against the last interpretation can be said, that beside the old perfect εἴωθα indicating a situation there is no other form, and that the construction conflicts with that of εἴωθα, and that a translation `acting conform his character' v. t., from a swine is strange. Still this seems to fit very well. Doubtful also K. Fr. W. Schmidt KZ 45, 231ff. connected ἔθων as present to ὠθέω. Cf. also Leumann Hom. Wörter 212f. - Diff. on ἔθω (to εἴωθα, ἔθος) Bechtel Lex. s. v. DELG prefers βλάπτων (which seems rejected by ἐριδμαίνουσι). Not to ἔθρις.Page in Frisk: 1,449-450Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἔθων

2 ἜΘω
ἜΘω, ich bin gewohnt, ich pflege, bei Homer zweimal: Iliad. 9, 540 σῠν ἄγριον, ὃς κακὰ πόλλ' ἔρδεσκεν ἔϑων Οἰνῆος ἀλωήν, vgl. Scholl. Herodian., welcher eine Lesart ἔδων erwähnt, und Scholl. Scholl. Aristonic. vs. 261 u. vgl. Apoll. Lex. Hom. p. 63, 16. – Zu ἔϑω rechnet man das häufig vorkommende perfect. εἴωθα, ich bin gewohnt, ich pflege, cum infin., Ionisch ἔωϑα. Dies perf. erscheint bei Homer achtmal: εἴωϑε c. inf. Iliad. 5, 766 Odyss. 17, 394; ἔωϑεν c. inf. Iliad. 8, 408. 422; particip. εἰωϑώς c. inf. Iliad. 6, 508. 15, 265; εἰωϑότες c. inf. Iliad. 5, 203; ὑφ' ἡνιόχῳ εἰωϑότι ohne infinit., = unter Leitung des gewohnten Wagenlenkers, von Pferden, Iliad. 5, 231, vgl. Scholl. Didym. – Thuc. 1, 132 εἰώϑασιν; ἐώϑασι Herodot. 3, 15; Thucyd. 1, 139 plusquampft. εἰωϑεσαν; ἐώϑεσαν Herodot. 1, 73; ἐώϑεα 4, 127; am häufigsten im particip. εἰωϑώς, gewohnt, gewöhnlich: ἀνακλάομαι παροῦσι τοῖς εἰωϑόσιν Soph. Phil. 627; οὐκ εἰωϑόσι οὐδὲ βουλομένοις ταλαιπωρεῖν Thuc. 1, 99; αὕτη ἐκείνη ἡ εἰωϑυῖα εἰρωνεία Σωκράτους Plat. Rep. I, 337 a; ἐν τῷ εἰωϑότι τρόπῳ, in gewohnter Weise, Apol. 27 b; παρὰ τὸ εἰωϑός, wider Gewohnheit, Phaedr. 238 c, wie Thuc. 4, 55; κατὰ τὸ εἰωϑός, nach Gewohnheit, Thuc. 4, 67; τὰ εἰωϑότα, das Gewöhnliche, Uebliche, Plat. Conv. 223 a; Ar. Ran. 1; Herodot. 3, 31 οὐκ ἐωϑότα ἐπενόεε ποιήσειν; 3, 80 ἐκτὸς τῶν ἐωϑότων νοημάτων.
